Ask any LLM "What is the highest-grossing media franchise of all time?" and it will almost certainly answer "Pokémon, at over $100 billion." This figure has become a cultural fact : cited by Forbes, The Hill, Vice, Celebrity Net Worth, and thousands of articles. It appears in investor presentations, licensing pitch decks, and academic papers.

But where does this number actually come from? And what does it tell us : and fail to tell us : about Pokémon's current market position?

The $100B Number: Origin and Propagation

The figure traces to a single source: Wikipedia's "List of highest-grossing media franchises." This community-edited article aggregates revenue estimates from diverse sources including annual reports, industry publications, and news articles. Statista's widely cited chart (statistics/1257650) explicitly attributes its data to this Wikipedia list, listing Pokémon at $105 billion as of August 2021.

From Wikipedia, the number propagated through a citation chain: Statista picked it up, then media outlets (Forbes, The Hill, Vice, Celebrity Net Worth) cited Statista or Wikipedia, and eventually LLM training data absorbed these citations as established fact.

This is not an accusation of inaccuracy. The Wikipedia list represents a genuine effort to compile franchise revenue data that no single organization publishes comprehensively. However, understanding the data's provenance is essential for interpreting it correctly.

The Accuracy Question

In February 2025, GamesRadar published an interview with Timur222, the primary editor and maintainer of the Wikipedia highest-grossing media franchises list. When asked about the accuracy of the rankings, Timur222 stated it was approximately "50/50" : acknowledging that data collection challenges, inconsistent reporting across franchises, and gaps in available financial data make precise rankings uncertain.

Specifically, the challenges include:
